#35 Holistic Approaches to Health and Sustainability
Approaching health issues at any scale requires approaches to be holistic to increase likelihood of issues being eliminated; this has become an ever increasing requirement, especially now that we are in the midst of a pandemic. In this podcast, and in my personal life, sustainability has always been a key aspect of living, in which health and happy lives can be achieved through sustained livelihoods and environmental integrity.
It was then a relief and joy for me when I realised health frameworks, based off this concept of sustainability, are already in place within the scientific community, ready to be used by policy and decision makers to tackle health issues as difficult as the pandemic. In this episode, I discuss the three main health frameworks currently being used, One Health, EcoHealth and Planetary Health, and the need for approaches to be interdisciplinary so that health issues are dealt with in a sustainable manner.
Episode Structure:
- Recapping purpose of this podcast, being to dismantle classism in academia/education by providing adequate information to non-professionals whilst practicing my right to freedom of speech through voicing my personal opinions
- Brief recap on the main theme of sustainability in the podcast, especially environmental and social sustainability
- Need for sustainability to be explored beyond the environmental angle and into the medical/health sector
- Discussion for the three main health approaches (One Health, EcoHealth and Planetary Health) and the limitations for each + how they have been expanded over the years
- Possibility of merging One Health and EcoHealth & separating Planetary Health from health approaches
- My personal preference for the health approaches and acknowledgement that a single approach can't be used for all cases
- Gaps in health frameworks for explicit support of human and non-human mental wellbeing and the influence of environmental health on mental health, with examples of my previous episodes exploring this intersection
